Handcrafted with passion, built to last

Welcome to Robinson Gay, a family business renowned for traditional handmade furniture. Established nearly 40 years ago by Stephen Robinson-Gay in Northumberland, we have become synonymous with high-quality furniture that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Our team, led by Stephen and his son Jason, is dedicated to creating furniture that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and functional.

Our Services

At Robinson Gay, we offer a wide range of services, from designing and creating new furniture to restoring antique pieces. Our furniture range is extensive, encompassing faithful copies of antique originals, contemporary kitchens, and offices, and most of our work is commissioned. However, we also have examples of our work available for sale at our gallery in Hexham or via our website.

Our furniture is distinctively marked by the use of natural grain of selected timbers and pronounced jointing detail. We often use a variety of English or European hardwoods mixed in the same piece, such as oak, ash, elm, cherry, and walnut. We also use burr oak or elm as a banding with inlayed lines, creating unique and progressive designs that are traditionally constructed by our highly skilled team. The pieces have a unique quality and patina that improve with time, eventually becoming heirlooms of the future.

Our Workshop

Our production workshops are located at Kirkharle, where Jason heads our team of cabinet makers and apprentices. We welcome visitors to our workshop by appointment, where you can see our team at work and discuss any aspect of our work. We also have a showroom in Hexham, where you can see examples of our work and discuss commissioning a piece of furniture tailored to your specific requirements.

Materials

We use a variety of materials in our work, with a focus on using natural wood in its purest form. We believe that the beauty of wood lies in its natural grain, and we strive to highlight this in our designs. We use a variety of English and European hardwoods, including oak, ash, elm, cherry, and walnut. We also use burr oak or elm as a banding, creating unique and distinctive pieces of furniture.

Commissioning a Piece

Most of our work is commissioned, and we welcome the opportunity to work with you to create a piece of furniture that meets your specific requirements. We will work with you to understand your needs and create a design that meets your requirements, using the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. We will keep you informed throughout the process, from the initial design stage to the completion of the piece.

Our Team

Our team is our strength, and we are proud of the skills and expertise of our cabinet makers and apprentices. We believe that traditional craftsmanship is vital in creating high-quality furniture, and we invest in training and development to ensure that our team has the skills and knowledge required to create the best possible pieces.

In conclusion, at Robinson Gay, we are dedicated to creating high-quality, handmade furniture that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. We use the finest materials and are committed to creating pieces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and functional. We welcome visitors to our workshop and showroom and look forward to working with you to create a piece of furniture that meets your specific requirements.
