Barry's Home Bakery

Barry's Home Bakery is a proud, family-run business based in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear. Established in 1957 by Harry Nickerson and his wife June, the bakery has grown to become a beloved institution in the North East, known for producing award-winning bread, cakes, pies, pastries, and seasonal goods.

Our commitment to quality and affordability has been the cornerstone of our business since its inception. We take immense pride in providing our customers with a wide variety of delicious baked goods at reasonable prices. Over the years, we have built a strong reputation for delivering excellent products and services to the general public, both directly and indirectly, through our network of retailers.

In 2016, we were delighted to receive a maximum score of 5 stars in Gateshead Council's "Scores On The Doors" scheme. This acknowledges our high standards in food hygiene, safety, and structural compliance, as well as the confidence we have inspired in our management.

Our Products

At Barry's Home Bakery, we offer an extensive range of products, from traditional bread and savoury items to sweet treats and seasonal specialities. Our expertise in creating award-winning goods is reflected in every product that leaves our ovens.

• Bread: Our bread selection includes large and small white and brown loaves, wholemeal loaves, rolls, and baps. We also offer large sliced white, large sliced brown, and small sliced varieties of all types, as well as large teacakes, hot cross buns, and a selection of sandwich loaves.
• Sweet: We are proud of our assortment of mouth-watering sweet goods, such as trifles, custard and vanilla slices, fruit bread, scones, cream donuts, sponge drops, apple turnovers, and chocolate eclairs.
• Savoury: Our savoury range includes a variety of pies, pastries, and sausage rolls to please every palate. From our famous Scotch pies and pasties to our sausage rolls, pork pies, and steak slices, there is something for everyone.

Our Heritage

Barry's Home Bakery's rich heritage dates back to 1957 when Harry and June Nickerson opened their first bakery in Gateshead. Harry, a trained pastry chef, had gained valuable experience in hotels across the British Isles, including the Dorchester in London.

The Nickersons' first shop was situated in Sunderland Road, Gateshead, near the tram station. With the help of his wife June, Harry laid the foundation for what is now Barry's Home Bakery. Over the years, the family business expanded to include additional shops in Felling High Street and Deckham.

In 1963, the bakery relocated to its current location on Wellington Road in Dunston, Gateshead, where our head office remains to this day. In 1970, son Barry joined the business, followed by youngest son Aaron in 1979. Both completed their bakery apprenticeships before taking over in 1995 upon their parents' retirement.

As a family business, we value the importance of care, quality, and tradition. Our longstanding history in the baking industry is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that we put into every product we create.
