Transforming Your Ideas into Handcrafted Furniture
Situated on the picturesque Somerset Levels, Hummerston Ward is a small, esteemed bespoke furniture and joinery company that has been creating beautiful, tailored pieces for over three decades. Our commitment to customer satisfaction is unwavering, as we meticulously attend to every aspect of the commission process, from the selection of premium timber to maintaining open client communication. We specialise in crafting furniture that adheres to either traditional or modern tastes, ensuring that the final product seamlessly complements your personal space. Our expertise covers an extensive range, from fitted and free-standing furniture for rooms such as kitchens, bedrooms, and studies, to individual items like coffee tables, mirrors, and even front doors.
Humble Beginnings and Expansion
Hummerston Ward's story began in Addiscombe, South London, in February 1988. Founded by two friends, Paul Hummerston and Glen Ward, the company initially focused on batch producing Victorian-inspired bathroom furniture, which was highly sought after at the time. However, a series of events during the first two years, including an economic downturn and the departure of one partner, led to a shift in the business model. By 1994, we had relocated to Somerset, seeking a change of environment and lifestyle for ourselves and our families. During the subsequent years, we continued to supply design studios in Surrey, eventually transitioning to working primarily on private commissions both locally (Somerset and Dorset) and from Surrey.
The Commission Process
Our commission process consists of several stages, all of which are tailored to suit the specific project and client preferences.
- Meeting the clients: We prioritise personal interaction and avoid using CAD software, preferring to engage in face-to-face discussions to better understand your vision and expectations.
- Timber selection: We personally select all timber utilised in our creations. In our workshop, you'll find projects in progress, such as oak sideboards and maple wardrobes, which highlight our dedication to fine craftsmanship.
Bespoke Furniture Examples
We have had the privilege of creating numerous unique, bespoke furniture pieces over the years. Here are a few notable examples:
