Follow in Burns' Footsteps
Friars Carse is a stunning country house hotel located in a 45-acre Dumfriesshire woodland estate, with lawns extending down to the banks of the River Nith. Our hotel offers a warm welcome to all our guests, with a magnificent panelled entrance hall, elegant staircase, well-furnished spacious lounge with views over the garden and river, comfortable bar, and a panelled snooker room with a full-sized table.
About the Hotel
Friars Carse has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, when it was established as a friary. The property later became home to the Riddell family and was named Glenriddell. Our hotel has close associations with Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, who was a frequent visitor to the estate. In fact, Friars Carse is where Burns had a famous drinking competition with Fergusson of Craigdarroch, which he later put into verse. Our hotel has undergone several transformations over the years, from a private residence to a hotel in 1938.
