History of The Pheasant Inn
The current name "Burwardsley" is believed to translate to 'clearing in the woods.' The ancient spelling of the settlement was 'Burwardslei.' This name is derived from two Anglian words, the personal name Burgweard' and an Anglian word 'leah' meaning 'clearing.' By 1650, there were known to be three ale houses in Burwardsley, one of which was almost certainly The Pheasant Inn, with only a brief period at the end of the 18th century when the license was allowed to lapse.
Publicans Through the Years
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, our hotel has been under the careful management of five families: the Whartons, Barnes, Ellises, Greenhaughs, and Nelsons. The names of the publicans from the previous century are recorded, but little detail exists about them. The Wharton family, including James, Joey, and Hugh Wharton, ran the pub from 1840 until 1928, with James Wharton being listed amongst West Cheshire's longest-serving licensees as having run The Carden Arms for over 41 years.
