We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to you from Whitakers Opticians, an independently owned, family-run business that has been serving the local community since 1932. Our current owners, David Armitage, Tracey Armitage, and Richard Barker, are proud to carry on the legacy of the Whitaker family and continue to provide top-quality eye care services to our valued patients.

Our History

Whitakers Opticians has a rich history that spans over eight decades. The business was founded in 1932, and it has been passed down through three generations of the Whitaker family. In 2014-15, Jonathan Whitaker, the third-generation owner, decided to sell the practice due to health reasons. We were thrilled when David Armitage and Richard Barker, who had been long-standing members of the team, agreed to purchase the business.

David and Richard are now jointly own the business with Tracey Armitage, David's wife. Tracey joined the business in 2011, after working in Todmorden since 1994. Together, we are committed to providing our community with the same high level of clinical eye care, top-quality frames, and lenses that the Whitaker family has built its reputation on over the past 80 years.

Our Team

Our team consists of skilled and experienced optometrists, opticians, and support staff. Here are some of the key members of our team:

• David Armitage BSc MCOptom - David, along with his wife Tracey and friend Richard, is one of the current owners of Whitakers Opticians. David has been with the practice since before he qualified as an Optometrist at Cardiff University in 1990. He is proud to have completed his pre-registration year under the expert supervision of Trevor Whitaker.
• Tracey Armitage BSc MCOptom - Along with her husband David, and friend Richard, Tracey is one of the current owners of Whitakers Opticians. Since qualifying from Cardiff University in 1992, Tracey has worked primarily in independent opticians, including 17 years with a leading independent optician in Todmorden.
• Richard Barker FBDO - Richard is one of the current owners of Whitakers Opticians. He has been with the practice since 1988 when he was a trainee under the supervision of Stanley Topliss. Richard is a dispensing optician, and in 1995, he became a member of the Association of British Dispensing Opticians.
