A Brief History
The site is set in the historic grounds of Cove Estate, which once housed Dunskellie Castle, the home of William Irving of Dunskellie, a great friend and supporter of King Robert the Bruce. It was here that Bruce sought refuge during the Scottish Wars of Independence and spent three months living in a secret cave on the estate. The cave, now known as King Robert the Bruce's Cave, is said to be the inspiration for the famous phrase "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again, " which is attributed to King Robert the Bruce.
