Empowering Communities through Renewable Energy
Based in Whalley, Lancashire, Whalley Community Hydro is a pioneering community-owned renewable energy project generating clean electricity from a 100kW hydroelectric scheme. Launched in 2014, our mission is to inspire and empower local communities to embrace sustainable energy solutions.
Our Story
Inspired by the Transition Towns movement, Whalley Community Hydro emerged from local concerns regarding energy security and climate change. We envisioned a project that would harness the power of the River Calder to generate clean electricity for our community. In 2010, the idea began taking shape, culminating in the construction of our hydropower plant in 2014.
What We Do
Our primary focus lies in generating sustainable electricity through our hydroelectric plant. The clean energy produced is fed directly into the national grid, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and fostering a transition away from fossil fuels.
Beyond electricity generation, we actively invest in renewable energy initiatives and projects that benefit our local community. Through our Community Benefit Fund, we support local schemes that drive energy security and sustainability.
Our People
Whalley Community Hydro is governed by a passionate team of volunteers who are dedicated to the project's success. We are homeowners, business owners, farmers, and concerned citizens, all united in our commitment to creating a more sustainable future.
Our Achievements
- Generated over 506,942 kWh of clean energy in 2023.
- Achieved record-breaking monthly output of 54,281 kWh in April 2024.
- Sustained production of over 60,000 kWh for six consecutive months.
