Established in 1793, Adkin has evolved over the years from an auctioneer and printing firm to the reputable Rural and Commercial Surveying Practice that it is today. Our business is founded on a deep understanding of the environment in which we operate and the long-standing relationships forged with the farming and rural community. At Adkin, we are committed to providing a first-class and personalised service, offering expert knowledge and experience to help you manage your Estate, Farm, or Commercial Property effectively.

A Short History of Adkin

The earliest records indicate that Edward John Belcher of Wantage started a business as an auctioneer, printer, and surveyor in 1793. By 1840, his son John had taken over, listing himself as an auctioneer, appraiser, and surveyor in Kelly's directory. The Belcher family's association with Adkin lasted for over two centuries until 1956 when J. B. King, already trading at 14 High Street, Abingdon, joined forces with Charles Duncan Adkin. In 1914, the firm became known as Adkin, Belcher & Bowen and expanded its services to hold weekly Sales of Stock in Abingdon market, Abingdon Annual Spring Sale, and the Didcot Wool Sale.

In 1958, Adkin, Belcher & Bowen was appointed as Auctioneers at the new Livestock Market in Abingdon. Over the following decades, the firm experienced several mergers with other practices and expanded its services to include specialist departments for House Sales and Valuations, Structural Surveys and Reports, Town Planning and Compensation Assessment, and the Sale and Valuation of Antiques and Fine Arts.

In 1989, TSB bought the business, and Philip Pocock, Julian Sayers, and Simon Alden joined the Management Board for Adkin. Seven years later, in 1996, TSB sought to sell their interest in the agricultural side of the business. Philip Pocock, Julian Sayers, and Simon Alden saw a valuable opportunity, purchased the agricultural side, and established Adkin Rural & Commercial. Sarah True later joined the firm in 2012, joining Philip, Julian, and Simon in leading the company forward.
