Our History
Established in 1826, we've been providing auctions and valuations for private and professional clients for nearly two centuries. Our expertise and guidance have helped countless clients navigate the world of fine art auctions. We're proud to be one of the oldest and most respected fine art auctioneers in The North West and Lancashire.
Service and Staff
The reviews suggest that the service and staff at Capes Dunn & Co Ltd, Stockport, vary greatly. On the one hand, some reviewers have had excellent experiences with the staff, citing friendly, helpful, and courteous service. Author Vambo Marbleeye praised Pamela for resolving a problem efficiently, while Author Dr. Nick Longos described the staff as "fabulously fabulous" and "very accommodating". Similarly, Author Mick Wood and Denise Pickup mentioned that the service was excellent, with Denise praising the staff for being helpful with directions, loading, and deliveries.
On the other hand, some reviewers have had disappointing and even appalling experiences with the staff. Author A.J. Riley described their experience as "terrible", citing poor communication, lost items, and unrealistic valuations. Author Hannah Simpson reported that the valuer, Michael Perry, was unreliable, disorganized, and dishonest, and claimed that he refused to provide estimates and ignored their emails and calls.
Auction House
Some reviewers expressed dissatisfaction with the auction house itself. Author A.J. Riley described the listings as "amateurish" and said that the camera phone used to take photos was poor quality. Author Hannah Simpson was upset that their items were sold far below value and that the auction house lost many of their consigned items.
However, Author Roy Cavanagh MBE mentioned that they quickly followed up their first visit to the auction house with another one, suggesting that they had a positive experience.
Valuations
Some reviewers were unhappy with the valuations provided by the auction house. Author A.J. Riley reported that the valuer undervalued their items and that the estimates were unrealistic. Author Hannah Simpson claimed that the valuer refused to provide estimates and ignored their emails and calls.
However, Author Denise Stevens reported that the valuation they received was far lower than expected, saying that the item was worth between 2-300 but was valued at just 25.
