Welcome to Dunmail Park Shopping Centre, Cumbria's favourite shopping destination. Since our establishment in 1988, we have taken great pride in providing a friendly atmosphere and a unique combination of shops that cater to the needs of our valued customers. Our shopping centre benefits from over 500 free car parking spaces, making it convenient for you to shop till you drop.

Our History

Before work began on Dunmail Park in 1986, the site had a rich history that spanned over a century. The site had been used as a mining site, iron works, colliery, steel works, and a textile mill, providing employment for over 5,000 people at its peak. The area surrounding Siddick Ponds remained undeveloped until the late nineteenth century when minerals were discovered, and industrial activity began to grow.

The West Cumberland Hematite Ironworks was founded in the 1860s, followed by the North Western Hematite Steel works, the Cleator and Workington Junction Railway, and the St Helens Colliery. The area's industrial growth continued, and by the early 1930s, it was providing jobs for over 5,000 people. In 1937, English Industrial Estates built a 150,000 sq ft textile mill on the site now occupied by Dunmail Park.

The textile mill, colliery, and steel works continued to produce goods until the works closed, followed by the railway sidings used by the works. The textile mill had become Courtalds but closed in the mid-1970s, leaving the site unused. In the early 1980s, the Dunmail Park site became part of an Enterprise zone and was purchased by J Dixon & Son Ltd. With a vision to create the region's first indoor and out-of-town shopping centre, works began in 1986, and Dunmail Park Shopping Centre opened in 1988 to great acclaim.

Since then, we have continued to expand and improve our facilities, with the addition of a petrol station, six retail units, a six-screen independent multiplex cinema, four new units, a restaurant, and a new car showroom. Asda arrived at the centre in October 2010, followed by Subway and Costa.

Reviews
Positive: Many reviewers praised the centre for its good shopping experience, especially Asda, and the quality of food and drink options.
Negative: Some reviewers were disappointed by the lack of variety and closure of shops, and others had negative experiences with the restaurant and parking options.

Parking and Accessibility

Some reviewers found the parking area to be large and convenient, while others struggled with limited spaces, especially for families with babies. There are also concerns about the lack of monitoring of parking spaces, leading to issues with disabled parking and difficulty navigating the parking lot.

Shopping Experience

Asda itself is considered fab by many, with a great selection of stock and friendly staff. However, some reviewers have noticed that many shops have closed down, leaving the centre somewhat lacking in variety. The cinema and Asda are the main attractions, but the centre could benefit from more retail options. The furniture shop is often mentioned, with some reviewers praising its quality and affordability, while others found it overpriced.

Food and Drink

Breakfast at the centre is a highlight for many, with customers raving about the quality and variety of options. The cakes are homemade and delicious, and the soups and pies are also made fresh on-site. However, some reviewers have had disappointing experiences with the restaurant, citing bland and overpriced food.

Ambience and Cleanliness

The centre's interior is described as light and airy, but some reviewers have noticed that it can be dirty and in need of cleaning. The Costa coffee shop in the sunny courtyard is a lovely spot, and the cinema is also a popular attraction.

Overall Experience

While some reviewers have enjoyed their visits to the centre, others have been disappointed by the lack of variety and poor service. Some have noticed that the centre is in decline, with many shops closing down.
