South Moor Golf Club - Historic Championship Golf Course in Durham
South Moor Golf Club, established in 1924, is a historic championship venue designed by the renowned Dr Alister MacKenzie, famed for Augusta National and other iconic courses. Our heathland layout, nestled amidst gorse, heather, and bracken, offers a challenging yet rewarding round for golfers of all abilities, with large, undulating greens that test precision and strategy. The course has evolved significantly since its inception, with a pivotal redesign by MacKenzie in 1925 that expanded it to 18 holes and enhanced its natural contours. Our heritage is deeply intertwined with local mining history, having been shaped by colliery officials and supported by the National Coal Board in its early years. Today, we remain committed to preserving this legacy while modernising our facilities, exemplified by the newly launched Golf Performance Centre under the leadership of PGA Advanced Coach Steven McDonnell.Steven brings over 280 coaching victories and a visionary five-year plan to elevate our services, including state-of-the-art Trackman technology, bespoke coaching programs, and expanded junior development initiatives. We host prestigious events such as the North of England Under 14s Championship, attracting players from around the globe, while offering accessible membership packages to ensure golf remains inclusive and affordable. Our dedication to community engagement extends to school partnerships and the Get Into Golf programme, fostering the next generation of players. With a rich past and a forward-looking ethos, South Moor Golf Club stands as a beacon for golf enthusiasts seeking excellence in a historic setting.
