Empowering writers, celebrating poetry

The Poetry Business has been a stalwart of the UK's poetry scene for over three decades. During this time, we have established a reputation for excellence in publishing, editing, and organizing literary events. Our mission is to champion new and emerging poetry talent, while also celebrating the work of established poets. We believe that poetry has the power to inspire, uplift, and challenge, and we strive to make it accessible to a wide audience.

Our Services

We publish a diverse range of poetry books and pamphlets under our smith|doorstop imprint, showcasing the work of both new and established poets. Our publications are aimed at a wide audience, from poetry enthusiasts to academics and students. We also produce a literary magazine, The North, which features some of the best new and innovative poetry from around the world.

In addition to our publishing activities, we run a range of literary events and workshops, which provide a unique opportunity for poets to develop their craft and connect with others who share their passion. These events include Writing Days, masterclasses, and residential courses, all designed to support the development of new and innovative poetry.

We are also committed to promoting excellence in poetry through our competitions. Our International Book & Pamphlet Competition and the New Poets Prize provide a platform for poets to showcase their work and gain recognition. The judging panel consists of leading poets and critics, who carefully select the winners and finalists.

Our Team

Our team consists of experienced poets, editors, and administrators who are dedicated to promoting and celebrating poetry in all its forms. We are committed to being inclusive and welcoming to all, regardless of background, identity, or experience.

Our History

The Poetry Business has a long and storied history, dating back to the 1980s. Over the years, we have published some of the most talented and innovative poets of the past few decades. We have also developed a reputation for producing high-quality books that are both beautiful and thought-provoking.
