Transforming Your Outdoor Space, One Garden at a Time
The Dinnington Docks is an unspoilt country pub tucked away in the picturesque Somerset countryside, boasting breathtaking views from its spacious garden, skittle alley, and ample parking area. This cherished establishment is renowned for its exceptional Cask Marque approved local ales, fine local ciders, spirits, and a carefully curated wine list, with many wines available by the glass. These offerings are designed to complement a varied menu showcasing locally sourced ingredients, presented as classic pub fare, daily specials, or the culinary delight of starters, mains, and desserts. The Dinnington Docks offers an experience of excellent food and drink, served in a warm, inviting atmosphere - it's no wonder that this establishment holds a special place in many hearts as a beloved local tradition.
The pub's interior has remained largely unchanged for 60 years, featuring many elements that are even older, all nestled in a charming Hamstone building beside the ancient Fosse Way Roman road. The land on which the Dinnington Docks stands was once part of the vast Poulett family estate, with the English Channel and Bristol Channel both visible from their expansive property. Originally called the Rose & Crown, the pub's foundations include stones repurposed from a nearby Roman Villa, discovered by the Time Team. With its unspoilt interior, the Rose & Crown attracted many a weary traveler, including the Time Team crew while they filmed scenes for the television series.
The pub was renamed the Dinnington Docks by locals, inspired by the nearby canal docks that were in use during the railway's heyday. Although there is little evidence of these docks or the railway today, the pub proudly displays photographs and drawings of their history on its walls. Rail memorabilia, including the signage for the Dinnington Docks and Allowenshay signal boxes, can also be found throughout the establishment. Rumor has it that, on a quiet night, one might still hear the faint sound of a train whistle.
Our Story
Our journey with the Dinnington Docks began in October 2018, although the story begins several decades earlier. As a child, summers were spent visiting my Godfather, a man with two great passions: trains and beer. Each summer was filled with trips to various pubs and heritage train lines in Northamptonshire and the surrounding counties, interspersed with helping him build an 'n' gauge model railway - a hobby we both adored. Before long, I had accumulated an impressive collection of beer mats, bar towels, and even some stolen glasses, representing breweries from across the country. By the age of 10, I was well-versed in the flavours of beer, its production process, and even some of the history behind the breweries - leaving my parents quite puzzled by my burgeoning interest in this adult beverage.
Around 18 years ago, I learned about a peculiar pub - an establishment that served superb ales but possessed a slightly unusual atmosphere. On a whim, I convinced my wife to accompany me on a bicycle ride a few miles outside Ilminster to partake in the pub's offerings. The Rose & Crown, as it was called then, felt like stepping back in time. We indulged in the excellent beer and listened attentively to the captivating story of the Dinnington Docks. Instantly, the Dinnington Docks became my favourite pub, and I eagerly anticipated the opportunity to make it my own. When I discovered it was for sale, I knew I had to purchase it.
As a sentimental person, I fell in love with this enchanting pub and its team of genuine, kind individuals - both behind the bar and in the dining room. Together, we are committed to restoring the Dinnington Docks to its former glory, with a thoughtful and caring touch. This will not be a contemporary makeover, but rather a loving restoration. The Dinnington Docks will thrive once more, and we cannot wait to share the experience with our patrons.
