The History of Alston Moor Golf Club

Established in 1905, Alston Moor Golf Club has a rich and fascinating history. The club's first course was located at Black House Farm, officially opening on Easter Monday 1906, although there is evidence suggesting that a club existed on the site prior to this date. The first President of the club, Mr R.H.Horrocks of Salkeld Hall, was a skilled golfer and accomplished cricketer who served as both a founder member and Captain of Penrith GC in 1905. He went on to become the Sheriff of Cumberland in 1911. However, due to a disagreement over rent with landowner Mr Walton Dickinson, the course was relocated to Bayle Hill in 1914.

The new 9-hole course, with a total length of 1670 yds (2 par 3's, 7 par 4's), was opened by Mr Fleming and Mr Lamonby of Penrith in an exhibition match. Sadly, with the outbreak of the First World War, the club was forced into abeyance, resulting in the loss of the tenancy of the new course. In 1919, the club moved back to the old course at Black House Farm. Unfortunately, debts continued to accumulate, leading to the club's dissolution in 1923.

There are no records of the club's existence between 1923 and 1935, but it is believed that the course at Randalholme was opened in 1924, as evidenced by a match between Capt. A.C.N. Dixey M.P. and Mr Frank Hodges M.P., and the inscription on the Royse Cup, provided by Rev. W.H.Harvey Royse and first played for in the 1925/6 season. The President of the club at this time was Mr W.J. Horrocks, a fine golfer, and Cumbria Union Captain from 1926 to 1945, continuing the family connection with Alston Golf Club.
