Empowering a sustainable future, one project at a time.
The Cambridge Society for Psychotherapy has been a well-established UKCP-registered network of over 40 psychotherapists working in and around Cambridge since 1980. Originally formed out of discussions about how individuals could be best educated for the work of psychotherapy, the society has grown to become a trusted and respected organisation in the field. While we are formally known as the Cambridge Society for Psychotherapy, we have always been affectionately referred to as the 'Outfit'.
Our mission is to promote mental health and well-being through the provision of high-quality psychotherapy services. We are committed to the principles of equal opportunities and diversity, and strive to ensure that our services are accessible and affordable to all. We believe that psychotherapy can be a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation, and we are dedicated to helping our clients achieve their full potential.
Psychotherapy
We offer psychotherapy for adults, young people, children, and couples. Our theoretical roots are psychoanalytic, but our interests and emphases are diverse; we do not define ourselves by adherence to a particular school of thought. We believe that psychotherapy should be tailored to the needs of each individual, and we work collaboratively with our clients to create a safe and supportive space for exploration and growth.
Our approach is to move at the right pace for each person. Patient and therapist meet weekly, or more frequently, usually for 50-minute sessions. The length of treatment can be fixed or open-ended and can last for anything from a few months to a few years. Most members charge between 35 and 60 per session. We also offer lower-cost therapy with a trainee whose work is closely supervised. An initial meeting with a qualified therapist will be necessary to explore whether this is suitable for you.
Low-Cost Psychotherapy
We are committed to making psychotherapy accessible to all, regardless of financial means. That's why we offer low-cost therapy with a trainee whose work is closely supervised. This can be a valuable option for those who may not otherwise be able to access psychotherapy services. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to benefit from the transformative power of psychotherapy.
Training
We provide psychotherapy training in accordance with UKCP standards. We think of the Society as a learning community rather than a course, and encourage students to create their own encounter with the field. Our training is designed to be experiential and relational, with a strong emphasis on personal development and growth.
We follow the UKCP Equal Opportunities policy and are committed to promoting equal opportunities, to valuing diversity and to processes that are fair, objective, transparent and free from discrimination. Our training structure is rigorous and comprehensive, and we are proud of the high calibre of our graduates.
Supervision
We offer supervision for psychotherapists and counsellors. Supervision is an essential part of the therapeutic process, providing a safe and supportive space for practitioners to reflect on their work and deepen their understanding of the therapeutic relationship. Our supervisors are experienced and qualified psychotherapists who are committed to helping practitioners develop their skills and confidence.
Publications
The Society publishes OUTWRITE, an in-house, edited journal comprising submissions from students, ordinary and associate members. OUTWRITE is available in both hard copy and online formats. This publication provides a platform for the exploration and sharing of ideas and perspectives within the psychotherapy community.
