Established in 1852, the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers, commonly referred to as the Mining Institute, is the Royal Chartered membership organisation for science and technology in the North. Founded by the most prominent scientists and engineers of the time, our mission is to promote the advancement of science and technology, with a particular focus on the North of England. Our Younger Members Group oversees our events programme for early-career professionals and researchers.

The Mining Institute is home to one of the finest buildings in Newcastle, Neville Hall, a Victorian building boasting a stunning library and lecture theatre. Our library is globally renowned as the finest and largest coal mining library in the world, providing a unique resource for researchers and historians.
