NJ & CJ Allsopp Cabinet Makers is a small, dedicated team of craftsmen nestled in the historic village of Castle Bytham, Lincolnshire. Our workshop, which dates back to AD 1600, has a rich heritage having served as a wheelwright's, carpenter's, builder's, and undertaker's over the centuries. We are proud to continue this legacy, using many of the original tools and techniques handed down from our predecessors.
Walter Tunnard Naylor, a renowned local craftsman, is particularly remembered in our village, and examples of his work can be found throughout the area. We strive to uphold the high standards of craftsmanship he set, combining traditional methods with modern techniques to create unique, bespoke pieces for our clients.
Our Services
At NJ & CJ Allsopp Cabinet Makers, we offer a wide range of services tailored to our clients' needs. We design and build furniture to suit individual requirements, encouraging clients to visit during the making process. This collaborative approach ensures that the final piece meets your expectations in terms of function, form, and finish.
Our portfolio includes a diverse range of commissions, from church altars and furniture to domestic items such as dressers, clock cases, tables, and bedroom furniture. We also manufacture doors and window frames for listed buildings, ensuring exact replication of original architectural details in accordance with English Heritage and local Conservation Officer guidelines.
In addition to new builds, we offer a restoration service for antique and other furniture. We provide written estimates for all restoration work, which can be particularly useful for insurance claims. Our restoration service is meticulous, and we take great care to preserve the original character and charm of each piece.
Our Materials
We are committed to sourcing our materials locally, with over 85% of our timber sourced within a 50-mile radius of our workshop. We use small, independent suppliers and ensure that all our timber is grade one quality, fully kiln-dried to approximately 10% moisture content. This makes our timber suitable for modern houses with full central heating.
Our range of timber includes Oak (burr, quarter sawn, brown, and cat's-paw), Ash (ripple and plain), Walnut (black, figured), Cherry, Elm, Beech, Holly, Sycamore, and False Acacia. We also use Joinery quality Scandinavian Pine for more utility items such as doors, windows, and cupboards.
