Our History
Carlowrie Castle has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the 19th century. The castle was commissioned by Thomas Hutchison, an Edinburgh-based wine merchant and Provost of Leith, who commissioned the celebrated Scottish architect David Rhind to design the castle. The castle was completed by Thomas's son Robert, who went on to design the gatehouses and outbuildings in 1873.
The Hutchison Family
The Hutchison family played a significant role in the castle's history, with many members having been involved in the wine trading business and holding prominent civic roles. However, it is Thomas's granddaughter Isobel Wylie Hutchison who is the most intriguing member of the family. Born in 1889, Isobel was a pioneering explorer, botanist, and adventurer who defied convention by traveling alone on expeditions that few would attempt today. Her exceptional contributions to geography, exploration, and botany earned her several coveted awards, including the Mungo Park Medal.
