Experience the best of the Lake District

Located in the picturesque Lakeland Village, Backbarrow, just one mile south of the world-famous Lake Windermere and nearby the historic market town of Ulverston, the Whitewater Hotel and Leisure Club is the ultimate Lake District retreat. Steeped in history, our hotel building has a fascinating past, dating back to Tudor times as a corn mill controlled by the monks of Cartmel Priory.

Our History

As time passed, the unique position of the mill on the banks of the fast-flowing River Leven, running from Lake Windermere, enabled this building to be used for many purposes. It was later used as a paper mill, an Ainsworth cotton mill, and finally, an Ultramarine pigment factory before being converted into the hotel it is today. Interestingly, the building's last manufacturing venture was the production of blue pigment bags, which became a revolutionary way for laundries to achieve that whiter-than-white look for their customers. These ubiquitous bags became fondly known as Dolly Blues.
