Our History
The White Horse has a rich and fascinating history that dates back centuries. The village of Hinton St Mary is famous for the discovery of a Roman Villa, which was excavated in 1963. Following the dig, witnesses claimed to have seen the ghost of a tall man in a pale cloak, or toga, striding through the village and disappearing into a sidewall. This phantom, possibly the oldest in England, is said to haunt the village to this day.
The mosaic pavement from the Roman Villa is now on display at the British Museum in London, where it is considered a significant archaeological find. In one of the roundels of this mosaic, there is what is thought to be the earliest representation of Christ, portrayed as clean-shaven.
