The museum has been a treasure trove of knowledge, showcasing the island's past for many years. However, to preserve even more of Islay's fascinating history for decades to come, we need your support to extend the current storage facilities. About the Museum
The Museum of Islay Life is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation managed by a board of trustees who meet regularly. The museum opened in 1977, with the principal aim of conserving and displaying items representative of life in Islay over the past 12,000 years. It is housed in the former Kilchoman Free Church in Port Charlotte.
The Kilchoman Free Church was built after the disruption in 1843, and the Manse was built shortly afterwards. The Church was built by free labour, with farmers, crofters, local builders, slaters, and joiners giving their services free. The combined effort resulted in the building being completed in a short time. The Church was built on raised ground at the entrance to the village of Port Charlotte, overlooking Lochindaal. Besides the main building, there was a vestry at one end and a large porch at the other.
The Museum's Collection
The Museum of Islay Life has built up a collection of nearly 3000 objects and several thousand photographs, all of which illustrate life in Islay. Highlights of the collection include the Star Objects, available for purchase in the museum shop, as well as the Place names of Islay 2, Kildalton 2, Islay Miscellany 8.40, and the Guide to Islay 2.50. The Gordon Booth Library holds a collection of books, papers, and records of Islay, and the Museum Shop carries a selection of books, postcards, gifts, and toys.
Membership
Membership of the Museum of Islay Life is open to anyone who is interested in helping the Museum in its aim to conserve and tell the story of Islay. Membership permits free entry to the Museum. All subscriptions received go towards the running of the Museum.
Islay History for Kids
Iona Kirkpatrick, a student at Port Ellen Primary School, created an Islay history website aimed at kids as part of her Endeavour Project in Primary 7. The website includes her own photos and mini stories that bring the history of Islay alive.
