Established in 1997, the company is led by four brothers who each have areas of specialism, ensuring expertise across the entire range of building work. At Character Builders, we specialise in period property maintenance, with a diverse portfolio that includes work on Devon Long Houses, barn conversions, barn restorations, cottages, churches, timber frames, and general maintenance. We take a progressive and forward-thinking approach to restoration work, combining modern and traditional techniques to ensure the highest standards of craftsmanship. Our focus is on working with sustainable materials, and while we cover most aspects of general building work, including working with oak, cob, and lime, we also forge close links with specialist craftsmen who work alongside us when needed.

Meet the Team
At the heart of Character Builders is a team of experienced and skilled individuals who are dedicated to delivering the highest quality building services.
Tom Diffey, the company's managing director, has been managing the business since its inception. He is responsible for client liaison and coordinating the busy schedule of works. Tom has a wealth of experience across the board and specialises in roofing and carpentry. His personal interests lie in 'green living', and he looks to develop this ethos on site, in Character Builder's work.
Matt Diffey is an experienced stone carver and mason. He brings his skills as a sculptor to the company, having been apprenticed to renowned sculptor Peter Randall-Page. Matt has worked on projects including the stone carving at the Eden Project and has spent time training with marble specialists in Italy. Matt's specialist areas of work are stone masonry and cob work.
Sam Diffey is responsible for managing sites, with a real eye for detail in relation to internal finishes of properties. Sam also manages the workforce, leading and supporting the company apprentices and labourers. His specialist areas of work are cob and stone masonry.
Simeon Diffey is the youngest of the four Diffey brothers. He project manages sites alongside running the company payroll. Simeon has recently completed a Historical Building and Conservation Course at Kingston University, Building Crafts College, London. His interests lie in building and conservation.
Our Achievements
Character Builders are the 2013 regional winners of the Federation of Master Builders Builder of the Year award in the 'Most Heavenly Builder' category. They were nominated by their clients for their restoration work at Gidleigh Church. The team were lead by Sam Diffey.
