Embracing the beauty of art, environment and culture
Rhue Art, established in 1982, is a prestigious gallery based in Ullapool, on the North West coast of the Highlands of Scotland. Founded by Flick and James Hawkins, the gallery has been a mainstay in the Scottish visual arts scene for over three decades. Renowned for its dedication to promoting diverse, contemporary art, Rhue Art represents both established and emerging artists whose work spans various mediums, including painting, film-making, prints, photography, textiles, and sculpture.
Flick Hawkins' experience in the arts industry extends back to 1978 when she and her husband first moved to Ullapool. In 1995, Flick began working with Highland Arts, a government agency funded by the European Regional Development Fund, with the aim of marketing and promoting local artists. Over the years, Flick has curated numerous exhibitions and showcased artists' work at national and international art fairs, fostering close working relationships with artists from all corners of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.
When Highland Arts' funding came to an end, Flick utilised her extensive expertise and contacts to transform Rhue Art into an international platform, promoting and representing some of the finest artists in the region. The artists who choose to live and work in this stunning area cannot help but be influenced by their surroundings, resulting in artwork that reflects a profound respect for the land, its people, and culture, as well as a passion, skill, and integrity in their artistic approach.
