Our History
The practice was established in 1978 when Norman Smithers and Graham Purslow opened an office in Oakham, Rutland, providing civil and structural engineering services to UK and overseas clients. Throughout the 1980s, it earned a reputation as subsidence experts, which led to contracts from major insurers and loss adjusters. The firm began to expand its services to include building surveying, quantity surveying, and architecture.
In 2022, Gateley Smithers Purslow was acquired by legal and professional services group, Gateley. Since then, the business has traded under the new name of Gateley Smithers Purslow. We share the same client-first ethos and commitment to service excellence as Gateley, and the shareholders and directors are convinced that joining Gateley will enhance our client offering and provide the framework for our ambitious growth plans.

Review: In December 2022 my home was flooded. The group dealing with recovery were abysmal, and by August 2023 little had improved. Brandon was appointed, and proved to be a lifesaver. His positivity, drive, and professionalism mean that I'm now back in a transformed home.17 months on. What a difference the months since August have been, with constant progress and updated.
He and his team really made it happen for me particular thanks to Simone who was the epitome of efficiency and effectiveness, not an easy call when dealing with a grumpy, stressed, and distrustful me. You really triumphed Simone, thank you. I think GSP are lucky you work for them. If I was still working i would have tried to poach you! I especially appreciated your diplomacy and tact when dealing with my stress. Brandons calm explanation of what was going to happen all the way through the refit, (and why) really helped me.
He knew his stuff, made it happen for me despite this feeling to be a messy case. It's obvious that the contractors his company appointed also respected him. For me, the fact he quickly organised all the tests and works the initial company disregarded made me trust the outcome and his actions. I believe the work has all been finally approved also.
All of the above can be summed up., I would use GSP again in a heartbeat.though I really hope I don't need to! The dream team of Brandon and Simone (and the fantastic builders they appointed, Fenrir Construction Ltd ) could not have been better, and are, in my opinion, a credit to the company. Brandon is a bit of a super hero.

Review: Very poor service! We had an expert witness engineer report survey done from gateley Chester office who came to do a flat roof survey I will not name the surveyor here but he did not bring any ladders to get up to even look at the roof despite being booked months in advance! when he arrived at my property I asked him where his ladders were his reply was they did not tell me how high my roof was!
He got back in his car made a tel call and then I said you can use my ladders in my garage with hindsight this may not have been a good idea as they are not in great condition! He gingerly went up the ladders and observed flat roof but did not get onto the roof to give it a proper inspection! Health and safety he stated! Also vital evidence was left out of the report for over 2 months wich was later updated by gateley Smithers after I complained to the ceo of gateley about the basicly amatuer report by one of their surveyors but it came much to late in my case as my legal expenses solicitor decided to pull out of the case due to proportional costs - I am a proffesional tradesman myself I do not turn up at clients property and leave my important tools at home but this is what gateley smithers purslow done. very poor service from this company and this is a genuine honest review.

Review: I am a director of a firm of loss assessors helping claimants with their Insurance claims. We've been in business for 37 years and on a very regular basis we have to advise clients to instruct chartered engineers/surveyors to project manage the building/refurbishment of their homes after fires/floods. This company were recommended to us by one of several builders that we are considering for the tender process. Whilst we had heard of the company before we had never used them.
We are delighted to heartily recommend them and it has been absolute pleasure over the past 12 weeks working with them. We have found them to be exceptionally efficient especially when it comes to fast response times. So often we find surveyors/architects to be a very "fluffy" profession and often taking an age to respond to our own correspondence.
Necessarily we have to be very pedantic and "nitpicky" when representing claimants and everyone of our queries is always met with prompt and eminently useful responses. This company have very much "opened our eyes" to how a surveying/engineering firm should be run. The project we are currently working on will mean that we will be in near every day contact with them for the next 14 months and we feel that our clients couldn't be in better hands. We have already recommended them to another residential customer.

Review: I have had Smithers Purslow deal with my late fathers property which had to be re designed and re built after a fire. I must say that they were amazing from start to finish. They kept me informed throughout and made the process very easy indeed. A special thanks to Paul Thomas who continued to go that extra mile. If you are in doubt with who to use for your next project then look no further. Thanks again Tony Avery
