We capture the joy, one frame at a time.

We are a traditional family-run butchers shop in the heart of Great Shelford, Cambridge. Established in 1843, we have been serving the local community with fresh meat and produce for over 100 years. Our commitment to quality and excellence has earned us a prestigious membership with the Q Guild of Butchers for over 25 years.

Our Story

Family is at the heart of everything we do, and the food we source is no exception. Our friendly and local butchers are here to welcome you with a smile and help you select the best local meats and produce. Meet the Team:

  • Stuart Barker, Owner and Head Butcher, has been working in the family business since he was 14 and now runs the shop with a little help from his wife Katy.
  • Brian Blackwell, Butcher, has over 40 years of experience in the butcher's trade in the local area and enjoys dancing with his wife at the weekends.
  • Richard Barker, Butcher, has years of experience and is passionate about cooking and knows quite a bit about it.
  • Georgia Bridges, Butcher, is our full-time trainee butcher and knows just how to put a smile on a customer's face.
  • Ali Smith, Butcher, is one of our longest-serving members of staff, joining us back in 2000 and knows most of the regular customers better than they know themselves!
  • Robyn Eaton, Butcher and Pie Maker, is our wonderful shop assistant and maker of many of the ready-to-eat products in our deli.
  • David Barker, Owner and Butcher, is the original OG Butcher, legend and all-round gem. Come in and say hi, he is the oracle of all there is to know about meat and loves a chat.
  • Colin White, Butcher, is a village local with a lot of retail experience and enjoys a chat and the odd round (or two) of golf!
  • Ashley Hammond, Butcher, is a quick link:

Our Meats and Poultry

We take pride in butchering our meat in our open-plan shop for all to see. If there's a particular cut you require and we don't have it on display, then just ask. We use locally sourced meat, mainly from Harlton Farms, just round the corner, and we believe very strongly that all the animals we get will have been treated with respect, care and lived as natural a life as possible.

Beef

Locally sourced, mainly from Harlton Farms, just round the corner, we use a variety of British breeds, including Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, Belted Galloway, Lincoln Red, and the local Red Poll. All our beef is free-range, under 30 months old, and reared to a high welfare standard.

We age all our beef carcasses for a minimum of 21 days, (and sometimes longer if requested) to improve the flavour and tenderness of the meat.

Beef Cuts

Our beef cuts include:

  • Traditional Cuts: steaks (rump, fillet, sirloin, T-bone, and rib-eye), roasting joints (rolled sirloin, fore-rib, short-rib, topside, silverside, and brisket), and mince (we sell 2 kinds, regular and extra lean!).
  • Trendy Cuts: onglet (also known as hanger steak), Tomohawk steak (a large rib-eye with the bone in), Porterhouse (a large steak with both Sirloin and fillet on the bone), and featherblade (also known as flat-iron), which comes from the shoulder.

Lamb

Another versatile meat with bags of flavour, most of our lamb comes from Lincolnshire, but we also get some from other trusted Cambridgeshire farms. A couple of times a year, we are extremely fortunate to get local lamb from Mr. Barker senior's small holding in Barrington.

Come and Visit Us

Our shop is open plan to show the care and attention that goes into preparing and butchering the best cuts. Pop in and meet our friendly and local butchers, who are here to help you with all your meat and produce needs. We look forward to welcoming you to our shop!
