Welcome to the South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, a unique cultural institution that has been a part of the Tyne and Wear community for many years. We are proud to be managed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums on behalf of South Tyneside Council, and we are committed to preserving and showcasing the rich history and artistic heritage of the region.

Our museum is home to a diverse and fascinating collection of artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of South Tyneside and its people. From prehistoric times to the present day, our collections cover a wide range of topics, including archaeology, social history, maritime history, fine and decorative art, and natural science. We are constantly adding to our collections and developing new exhibitions, so there is always something new to discover.

One of our most popular attractions is the Victorian Pantry Tea Room, where you can take a seat at one of the vintage tables and be served by our friendly staff in costume dress. The tea room offers a range of delicious homemade cakes, sandwiches, and hot and cold drinks, making it the perfect place to relax and refuel during your visit.

In addition to our collections and tea room, we also offer a range of services and facilities for our visitors. Our learning team has developed a range of resources and activities for schools and families, including Take One Treasure school learning and family activities. We also offer sensory journeys, where visitors can take part in digital story-telling sessions and bring the stories to life.

We are committed to making our museum accessible to all, and we have a range of facilities and services available to assist visitors with additional needs. These include sensory backpacks, which are available to loan from June 2024, and access information, which can be found on our website.

At the South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, we believe that heritage and culture are at the heart of any community. That's why we are committed to supporting and engaging with our local communities, and we offer a range of volunteering opportunities and community events throughout the year. We also welcome filming and venue hire requests, and we are proud to be a museum sponsor.

We are grateful for the support of our visitors, and we rely on donations and memberships to help us continue our work. If you are interested in supporting us, please visit our website to learn more.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, and we look forward to welcoming you again soon.
