The Foxlowe Arts Centre is a thriving hub for arts and culture, located in the heart of the historic market town of Leek. It was the brainchild of a group of local individuals who envisioned a vibrant space for various arts-related projects. The centre has grown steadily since its inception and now offers an array of services, including a cinema, comedy club, music and theatre productions, exhibition gallery, documentary films, talks programme, arts fair, room hire, heritage room, wedding and private function venue, fashion show, schools workshops, and an ever-evolving garden.
Initially, a group of volunteers took the first step in transforming the building, once known as No. 1 Leek, by clearing, cleaning, and decorating it for the first Christmas Exhibition in December 2011. This was followed by the opening of the community cafe and a programme of arts events. Over the years, the Foxlowe Arts Centre has expanded its offerings and established itself as a vital part of the local community.
The cafe is a particular point of pride for the centre, serving freshly cooked food and acting as a meeting place for visitors and locals alike. The cafe team strives to use Fairtrade produce and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. The centre's development has been made possible through the support of the local community, who have pledged financial contributions and volunteered their time. The Foxlowe Arts Centre entered into a 15-year mortgage in August 2015, with a donation from the Parkside Trust as a deposit and the support of Leek Town Council.
Foxlowe History
The elegant Georgian house that houses the Foxlowe Arts Centre has stood in its prime position at the head of Leek's Market Place for centuries, overlooking markets, gatherings, celebrations, and the everyday lives of Leek people. Originally known as No. 1 Leek, the house was built in the 1770s for Thomas Mills, a wealthy solicitor and landowner. After Thomas's death in 1802, his son inherited the house, which by 1819 had extensive grounds with groves, plantations, and a small lake in the valley below.
The Mills practice was later purchased by John Cruso, who was living at Foxlowe by 1834. John's son, also John, was a widower in 1851 and lived at Foxlowe with a cook, housemaid, laundress, and a footman. His coachman resided in Cruso's yard, a little further down Stockwell Street. John married again, and it was his second wife, Ann Cruso, who was deeply involved in the life of Leek.
