Fungal Nail Infection
Fungal nail infections are four times more likely to develop in the toenail than the fingernail. While they can appear unsightly, they are rarely painful and usually not serious. However, left untreated, they can cause the nail to become thickened, brittle, and even break off. We treat fungal nail infections using antifungal medicine, which can take several months to be effective.
Corns and Calluses
Corns and calluses are areas of hard skin that develop as a result of excessive pressure or friction from shoes. These conditions can cause discomfort and, in some cases, pain. Our podiatrists can treat corns and calluses by cutting away the thickened skin, preventing the build-up of skin can cause discomfort. We recommend using a foot file and emollient to soften the skin and preventative measures, such as choosing insoles or silicone covers, to prevent corns from re-occurring.
Verrucae
Verrucae are warts that develop on the soles of the feet, most commonly on the heel or ball of the foot. They are caused by a virus, are contagious, but the risk of passing them onto others is low. Verrucae can appear in pairs or groups and have a cauliflower-like appearance with rough areas of skin. We treat verrucae using a variety of methods, including Salicylic acid, cryotherapy (freezing), and our pioneering new microwave therapy, Swift.
