Tees Valley Music Service (TVMS) is a leading provider of high-quality music opportunities for children and young people across the Tees Valley, serving the boroughs of Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, and Redcar & Cleveland. We believe that every child should have access to a wide range of musical experiences, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our mission is to offer music tuition, support, and events in a diverse range of styles and genres.
All TVMS pupils receive free membership to our ensembles and choirs, ranging from beginner level to advanced bands and orchestras in each area and county-wide. We have a strong commitment to making our facilities and resources available to the wider community. We can provide events and workshops tailored to your specific needs, whether you are a church, corporate body, or social organization. Tees Valley Music Education Hub
TVMS is a lead partner of the Tees Valley Music Education Hub (TVMEH), a partnership of educational and cultural organizations and practitioners working together to provide the best possible musical opportunities for children and young people in the Tees Valley. TVMEH is one of 122 national Music Hubs created in 2012 to deliver the National Music Plan. Music Education Hubs receive central Department for Education funding, which is brokered and managed by Arts Council England.
Special Projects
TVMS is involved in national initiatives and is a key delivery partner in FIRST THING MUSIC. Since 2018, we have co-developed a teacher training program with project leader Lindsay Ibbotson and Lucinda Geoghegan, Chair of the BKA Education Committee, and Education Director for the National Youth Choir of Scotland. TVMS staff trained in the BKA method continue to roll this out to more schools across Tees Valley, and it is having a significant impact. Susan Robertson, Manager of TVMS
Susan is a singer, pianist, and experienced music teacher. She has taught curriculum subjects such as Taiko, Samba, African drumming, Recorder, and more. As the Manager of TVMS, Susan oversees the strategic direction of the organization and ensures that we deliver high-quality music opportunities for all our pupils and the wider community.
Jeff Sawdon, Assistant Manager
Jeff is a guitarist, singer, and multi-instrumentalist who plays bass and drums. As the Assistant Manager, Jeff supports the Manager in the day-to-day operations of TVMS, ensuring that our music tuition, events, and workshops run smoothly and efficiently.
The reviews of TVMS are mixed. On the positive side, several students have had a great experience, achieving high grades and enjoying the support and teaching provided. They appreciate the opportunities and memories made through the music activities. On the negative side, there are complaints about teachers being late or not showing up, poor communication, and a sense of being overcharged for services not received.
