The Bakewell Veterinary Clinic has stood for generations at the heart of the local community as an independent veterinary practice. The practice developed alongside a farriery based next to an old coaching inn in Bakewell town centre. Travellers would stay overnight and any ailing horses could be tended to by the farrier or vet. In those days the horse was the main focus of veterinary work but as agriculture developed, the practice soon grew and became more involved with the strong farming community of the Peak District.
The Peak District is a stunning place to live and work, and much of the countryside we enjoy today has been formed by generations of livestock farming. We are proud to be a product of this history and will do our best to look after the farming future of the Peak District for many years to come. In the post-war years, there was an increase in the need for veterinary services for companion animals and this side of the practice developed quickly until in 1988, the practice moved home from the town centre to the current site at Milford Farm. The clinic was purpose-built, although the internal layout has changed many times. The last two years have seen extensive refurbishments and an array of new equipment to bring the practice into the modern age. The practice is in a beautiful location by the mill stream and we are lucky to be able to offer free on-site parking to customers.
It quickly became apparent, however, that access for horse boxes over the bridge was not ideal and in 2007, the practice spread to include a dedicated equine facility just a stone's throw away on the Deepdale Business Park. Our Equine Clinic is the only dedicated equine facility in the area and has stabling, surgical facilities and an array of modern equipment to enable our team of equine vets to provide the best quality first opinion service possible.
Small Animal Clinic
Our small animal clinic is a purpose-built facility with state-of-the-art equipment, designed to provide the best possible care for your beloved pets. Our team of small animal vets has specialised interests, offering a breadth of expertise and knowledge to ensure the best level of care for your animals, however great or small. We are open until 7 pm for your convenience and offer free nurse clinics for weight loss, diabetes and old-age check-ups.
Progressive Farm Animal Services
Our farm animal services are on hand 24hrs for emergency calls or advice. We work closely with farmers to improve productivity and herd health status through farmer meetings, routine fertility visits, farm consultancy work and herd health planning. We offer packages for dairy, beef and sheep which qualify farmers for reduced price medications and services. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive, progressive and personalised service to support the farming community.
Dedicated Equine Clinic
Our dedicated equine clinic is the only one of its kind in the area and offers a 24hr ambulatory service or the option to bring your horse in to the clinic. We provide AI services, tendon scanning, dentistry, video gastroscope/endoscope, digital xray, surgical facilities and stabling. Our team of equine vets is dedicated to providing the best quality first opinion service possible, ensuring the health and wellbeing of your horse.
