A Short History of Whitehead Golf Club

Whitehead Golf Club, located in the heart of Islandmagee, has a rich and fascinating history that spans over a century. The club was originally founded in 1904 and had its first nine-hole course built on land above the Blackhead Path. However, due to deteriorating relations with the landowners and a discontent with the location, the club moved to a new location near the town's centre in 1909. By 1922, the committee had capped the combined ladies' and gents' membership at 400, reflecting the growing popularity of the sport in the town.

However, the club was forced to move again in 1934 due to the estate of the Marquess of Donegall's plans to use the land for housing. Offered land on a forty-year lease by a local businessman, Fedele Bonugli, the club moved its home to the land now known as the Bentra Golf Course on Slaughterford Road. The club operated from this location until 1975, when it was forced to move again due to the expiration of the lease and the Bonugli estate's request for a significantly increased rent.

The club's current location was identified as available, partly for sale and partly on long lease. Members accepted the proposal to move location, and the club's first ever 18-hole course was designed by a member, Brian Armstrong. The first nine holes were opened in 1973, the second nine by August 1975, with the construction of the clubhouse started earlier in that year. Subsequent additions to the club's facilities were developed over the next two decades, including significant improvements to the original course layout and the creation of the locker rooms complex in 1999.

The Course

Whitehead Golf Club's picturesque 18-hole course is perched on the basalt cliffs that overlook the sea on three sides, offering plenty of spectacular views as you make your way around. The course is a challenge for golfers of all levels, with narrow fairways, challenging greens, and plenty of hazards to keep you on your toes. The third fairway, in particular, is known for its hooded crows that have been known to mistake golf balls for eggs, leading to some unexpected and amusing moments on the course.
