Preserving the past, one piece at a time.
Who We Are
SuzandyCrafts is a husband and wife team based in Buckerell, Nr Honiton, Devon, comprising of Susan (nee Handy) and Malcolm Routh. Susan holds a BA (Hons) in Furniture Restoration from Buckinghamshire New University, and together they have a passion for restoring and preserving furniture to its former glory.
Our Story
After relocating from Maidenhead, Berkshire in May 2013, we established our workshop and showroom at Little Glebe, Glebe Farmhouse, Buckerell, Nr Honiton, Devon. This strategic location has proven to be extremely popular with clients en route from London and home counties to Devon and Cornwall. Our business has evolved over the years, and we have honed our skills to specialize in furniture restoration, particularly in the art of woven seating restoration using Cane, Seagrass, Danish, and other paper cords, as well as Riempie.
Our Services
We take pride in our expertise in replacing woven seating to chairs, stools, and other furniture pieces using traditional techniques and materials. Our services include caning, seagrass, danish, and paper cord weaving, as well as Riempie restoration. We also undertake a limited amount of rushing and structural repairs, ensuring that every piece of furniture is restored to its original condition.
Susan's expertise lies in the exacting finishing styles of French and continental caning, and she has a particular interest in Thonet and other bentwood furniture. Her methods of caning are historically correct, ensuring that every piece is restored to its original glory.
We understand that every piece of furniture is unique, and we take the time to assess each item individually, providing a personalized service to our clients. Our goal is to preserve the integrity of each piece, ensuring that it is restored to its original condition, rather than simply replacing it with modern materials.
What We Sell
In addition to our restoration services, we also sell a range of interesting antique and vintage furniture pieces, mainly chairs, including child/doll-size and folding chairs, such as steamer chairs. We always have a stock of small Victorian bedroom chairs that make ideal occasional chairs for entertaining, especially at Christmas.
We also have a very large selection of chairs that are "ripe for restoration" for those who would like to Do It Yourselves. Furthermore, we sell materials for DIY enthusiasts, including cane, seagrass, real South African white riempies, and raw riempie.
