Explore the rich history and heritage of Crawley with us!

Crawley Museums CIO is an independent local history museum that tells the fascinating story of Crawley through objects and their stories. Our museum consists of two sites: Crawley Museum and Ifield Watermill, both of which offer a unique glimpse into the town's rich history and heritage.

Our Museums

Crawley Museum is a vibrant space that showcases the town's history through exhibits, objects, and stories. We have a diverse range of permanent collections that reflect various aspects of Crawley's development, from prehistoric times to the present day. Our collections include objects from the Iron Age, medieval settlement, Victorian town, and 20th Century New Town development. Additionally, we have contemporary objects that put the present in context with the past. We also celebrate Crawley's communities today through our oral history collections, temporary exhibitions, and community engagement projects.

Ifield Watermill, on the other hand, is a majestic working watermill that dates back to 1660. Although it was rebuilt after a fire in 1683, it continued to operate commercially until the 1920s. After a period of deterioration, the watermill was restored in the 1970s and now boasts a working waterwheel and renovated mill building. Visitors can explore the mechanical instruments that demonstrate how the mill functioned in the past, as well as exhibitions about the history and restoration of the mill and the local area.

Our Services

We offer a range of services and activities that cater to different age groups and interests. Our events and temporary exhibitions are designed to engage, educate, and entertain visitors. We also provide educational programs and resources for children and adults, making us an ideal destination for school groups and community organizations. For those who want to get involved, we offer volunteering opportunities that enable individuals to contribute to the museum's development and operations.
