In September 2019, the White Lodge Hotel was honoured with a blue plaque, commemorating the life of the esteemed Shakespearean actress, Dame Madge Kendal. She and her actor-manager husband, William Hunter Kendal, resided at the hotel-then known as South Crescent Villa-from 1896 to 1920. During this time, Dame Madge graced the stages of London's West End for five decades, fostering friendships with notable figures such as George Bernard Shaw, Bram Stoker, and John Merrick, better known as the Elephant Man.
