Come for the charm, stay for the welcome

We are a traditional 17th century country inn, nestled in the heart of Herefordshire, close to the banks of the mighty River Wye, the footfalls of the Wye Valley Walk, the historic cathedral city of Hereford, and the famous Welsh border town of Hay-on-Wye. Our hotel is renowned for its warm atmosphere, delicious food, and excellent accommodation, making it the perfect location for you to explore the area and unwind at the end of a busy day.

About Our Hotel

The Red Lion Hotel has been a beloved landmark in Bredwardine, Herefordshire, since the 17th century. Our hotel is steeped in history, with its origins dating back to when it was used as a coaching inn. Today, we have carefully combined our rich heritage with all the comforts and facilities of a modern-day hotel. Every effort has been made to retain our olde worlde charm, including low beams, wonky floors, and traditional lead window panes, while also providing our guests with a comfortable and relaxing stay.

Food and Drink

When it comes to quenching your thirst, we have a wide range of drinks to choose from, including locally brewed lager, ale, cider, and stout, as well as a selection of soft drinks, spirits, and wines. Our chef, Mark, has created a menu that suits all tastes, using as much local produce as possible. From pub classics to chef's own specials, light bites to more substantial meals, vegetarian and vegan options, we have something for everyone. We are happy to accommodate children and offer half-portions at a reduced cost, where possible.

Fishing

The Red Lion Hotel is a paradise for anglers. We have some 8 miles of the River Wye, known as The Moccas Fishery, located at Bredwardine, between Hay-on-Wye and Hereford. Our season opens on the 16th June and runs until 14th March. We welcome anyone wishing to fish on a daily or weekly basis. Our salmon fishing season opens on the 4th March and runs until 17th October. Each season sees us recording our first fish during the opening weeks.

Activities

If you want to get out and about while staying with us, there's plenty of attractions and activities in the local area to keep you busy. Why not visit Hereford Cathedral and the famous Mappa Mundi exhibition, take the kids to the Small Breeds & Owl Centre at Kington, or explore your competitive side at Battlelands?! And a visit to Herefordshire wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Museum of Cider, and for the more active, canoeing down the magnificent River Wye from Hay-on-Wye (the famous town of books and the Hay Festival).

Stay with Us

Whether you're looking to eat, drink, or stay somewhere with plenty of olde worlde character and charm, a warm welcome, and great atmosphere, we're the place for you. Our hotel offers comfortable en-suite accommodation, a delicious menu, and a range of drinks to suit all tastes. We are ideally located to offer you the opportunity to discover some of the finest and most varied walking country, from the gentle rolling hills of the Welsh borders to the more strenuous high tops of the Brecon Beacons.
