Born to bake. Raised to perfection.
The Ginger Bread Man Bakery, situated at the heart of Walton-On-Thames, Surrey, is a renowned bakery and retail shop that has been serving the local community for nearly a decade. Our founder, Gareth Roberts, also known as the Ginger Bread Man, discovered his passion for baking at the tender age of 16. After completing a baking apprenticeship with Lee's Bakery, Gareth climbed up the ranks to become the Sales Development and Production Manager. The natural next step for Gareth was to establish his own bakery. In 2012, Gareth took over an old Lees Bakery shop at the Halfway, Walton-on-Thames, and the Ginger Bread Man Bakery was born.
Ever since then, Gareth has been providing the locals with the freshest and most delicious bread in Surrey. The bakery operates 24 hours a day, and our team of dedicated bakers, shop assistants, and managers work tirelessly to deliver the best products to our customers. Our team's hard work and dedication have paid off, and we have built a strong wholesale customer base, including local shops, cafes, sandwich bars, and canteens. Gareth, being the Ginger Bread Man, is always experimenting with new recipes and ideas, and the latest creation is our beetroot and caraway seed bread.
About Our Cakes
Cakes by JoJo, a company founded by JoJo, who discovered her love for cake decorating after enrolling in a cake decorating class in 2011, has recently joined forces with the Ginger Bread Man Bakery. JoJo specialises in occasion cakes and models, and she has Sugarcraft ABC qualifications in cake decorating and wired sugar flowers. Our collaboration with Cakes by JoJo has expanded our range of cakes and baked goods, and we are now able to offer fresh cakes and baked goods throughout the week in our shop, as well as catering to special occasions and wedding cakes.
About Our Shops
After much success with his wholesale business, Gareth decided to take over the shop at the Halfway. In December 2015, the Ginger Bread Man Bakery shop opened, offering the locals the chance to buy Gareth's bread straight from the source. Our menu is ever-growing, and we like to experiment with new trends and offerings. Breakfast baguettes and sweet treats are available from 7 am. Homemade sandwiches, pizza, hot pastries, as well as all our loaves, are available Monday to Saturday. With the particular success of our Saturday bread sales, Gareth started to expand the offerings. Our vast range of speciality bread is available on Saturdays with plenty of samples to help you choose something new.
In addition to our shop at the Halfway, we have recently opened two new shops in Addlestone and Hersham. Our Addlestone shop is located at 43 Green Lane, and our Hersham shop is situated at 33 Molesey Road. Both shops offer the same range of bread, cakes, and baked goods as our original shop, and our team is always on hand to help and offer recommendations.
Our Breads
We take pride in our bread, and we believe that our bread is the best in Surrey. We offer a wide range of bread, including sourdough, rye, wholemeal, granary, and seeded bread. We also offer a range of speciality bread, including our famous beetroot and caraway seed bread, sun-dried tomato and olive bread, and walnut and fig bread. All our bread is made using traditional baking methods, and we never use any artificial preservatives or additives.

Quality and Consistency
Some reviewers have had mixed experiences with the bakery's ability to deliver high-quality products. Dean Meredith was disappointed with the overcooked toastie, while Colin Flexman praised the fresh and tasty bread, including the poppy seed loaf. However, Brian Davis and Stuart Duncan enjoyed their bakery products, with Stuart raving about the Pastel da nata and ciabatta.
Service and Ambiance
The service at the bakery seems to be a hit or miss. While Dean Meredith and Jack Chang had negative experiences with the staff, Elisabeth Booth, Emma Bailey, and Stuart Duncan all praised the friendly and welcoming staff. The atmosphere of the bakery is also praised by many reviewers, with Stuart Duncan describing it as a traditional French boulangerie.
Food Variety and Quality
The bakery offers a range of products, including bread, quiche, salads, sausage rolls, and paninis. Some reviewers have specific favorites, such as Emma Bailey's sausage rolls and Stuart Duncan's Pastel da nata and charcoal ciabatta. However, Chris Andrews was disappointed with the steak and ale pie, which lacked flavor and tenderness.
Overarching Issues
Some reviewers have raised concerns about the bakery's practices, such as Jack Chang's delivery issue and Colin Flexman's criticism of the staff not wearing plastic gloves when handling bread and loose change.
