Horsham Karate Club

We are delighted to welcome you to our academy, a community of like-minded individuals dedicated to the study of Wado-Ryu Karate and other related disciplines. Our academy is led by Sensei P.D. Elliott, a 7th Dan in Wado-Ryu, and a group of experienced instructors who share the vision of preserving and promoting the art of Wado-Ryu Karate.

Our name, Samurai Enlighten Mushin Karate Academy, embodies the core values of our academy. Samurai stands for the honourable Japanese warrior, symbolising the discipline, courage, and integrity we strive for in our practice. Enlighten signifies the realisation of one's goals and potential through the study and practice of Karate. Mushin represents a clear and calm mind, free from distractions and preconceptions. Karate, of course, refers to the art of Wado-Ryu, and Academy represents a school of excellence where individuals can learn and grow.

Our Services

We offer a range of services, catering for both adults and children aged six and above. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced martial artist looking to change styles or move to the Sussex area, we would love to hear from you. Our classes are structured and tailored to suit the needs of our students, ensuring everyone can learn at their own pace.

Our services are based on the ABCs of Karate - fundamentals of agility, balance, and coordination. We believe that mastering these fundamentals is essential for proficiency in Karate, and we place a strong emphasis on their development in all our classes.

• FUNdamentals of Agility: In our classes, we focus on developing agility through various movements such as starting, stopping, changing direction, rotation, reaction, and complex motions.
• FUNdamentals of Balance: We teach students the importance of maintaining balance and stability by understanding the centre of gravity, base, losing balance, extending the base, positioning the centre of gravity, counterbalance, and moving forces.
• FUNdamentals of Coordination: Our instructors work with students to organise their limbs, generate force, differentiate speed and accuracy, and improve interception skills.

At S.E.M.K.A., we recognise that each student has unique abilities and needs. We do not adhere to a "one class fits all" policy, instead, we tailor our classes according to individual students' age and ability. This approach allows students to achieve their goals and milestones at their own pace, fostering a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

Our Affiliation

S.E.M.K.A. is affiliated with the British Wado Federation (BWF), European Wado Federation (EWF), and International Wado Federation (IWF). Our instructors are qualified and have attended various courses, including First Aid, Coaching Children, Protecting Children, Safe Training, and Karate Teaching Skills. We ensure all of our clubs and instructors have Martial Arts Insurance for professional indemnity and public liability, including member-to-member liability.
