Welcome to Saffron, where we proudly serve fine Indian cuisine in the heart of Derry ~ Londonderry. Our restaurant has a rich history and a deep connection to the culinary traditions of the Punjab district in the North West of India.

For over three decades, we have been sharing our time-honoured family recipes with the people of Derry/Londonderry. Our menu is a tribute to the Punjab region, known as the culinary heart of India and the traditional home of vegetarian and tandoori cooking. At Saffron, we use only the freshest ingredients and traditional cooking methods to bring the authentic flavours of India to our customers.

Our History

Our family moved to Derry/Londonderry from India in 1965. For many years, our mother worked in the shirt factories while our father sold clothes door to door and eventually opened a shop in Carlisle Road. As one of three boys, I often helped our mother and developed a keen interest in cooking from an early age.

During my studies at Manchester University, I was inspired by the many Indian restaurants along the curry mile of Rusholme. I wanted to introduce Indian food to my home town, where there were only a handful of restaurants at the time. In 1984, my brother and I made the ambitious decision to open India House in Carlisle Road, Derry/Londonderry.

We were fortunate to be introduced to a Nepalese gentleman called Shinga-Raj Shrestha, who was considered to be a true masterchef. With his expertise and our own knowledge of family recipes, we were able to put together a menu that is still broadly used today. India House ran for nearly three decades, and in 2013, we relocated to a more central location near the peace bridge and changed the name to Saffron.
