Buying Furniture from Neal Crampton
Acquiring a piece of Neal's furniture need not be a daunting or time-consuming experience. The majority of his furniture is made to commission, resulting in a unique piece that is designed to your exact specifications and made to the highest standards of craftsmanship. While commissioning furniture may not be the cheapest option, Neal strives to offer unmatched value in comparison to production furniture. By combining timeless design, the finest timbers, and exceptional craftsmanship, Neal creates furniture that will age gracefully in your home for generations to come.
Each commission is unique, and the process can vary greatly depending on your preferences. You may arrive with a firm design in mind, some thoughts or ideas, or measurements for a space you wish to fill. It is Neal's job to convert these into a design and ultimately, a piece of furniture. You may choose to be involved in the process as much or as little as you like. Regardless of your level of involvement, you will own a unique piece of furniture that meets your practical requirements and, ideally, reflects something of you that can be cherished in your daily life.
Neal Crampton's Journey to Bespoke Furniture Making
Before becoming a furniture maker, Neal worked as a university researcher in biophysics. While the subject was fascinating, it lacked a practical element. Neal found that furniture making was the perfect blend of the abstract and the practical, requiring both artistic and scientific skills. As a furniture designer-maker, Neal strives to balance these two aspects, producing beautiful and coherent designs while also ensuring they can be efficiently and effectively realised.
Neal finds the artistic side of furniture making particularly challenging, but is continually intrigued by the principles that underlie 'good' design. Most design principles stem from mathematical principles, so the scientist in Neal is never entirely lost. His aim is not to create 'wow' pieces, but rather, quietly impressive designs that feature clean lines and simple forms. Neal's designs also embrace design heritage, and he believes in the importance of sound principles over novelty.
Once the making of a piece begins, Neal must focus on how to make the piece in the most accurate and efficient manner possible. However, the challenge lies in knowing when to work with precision and when to work in a more organic, sympathetic fashion. In some cases, precision is crucial, such as when making a drawer that glides open effortlessly. In other cases, the decision is more difficult, such as whether an edge should be left crisp or softened to complement a particular grain feature. Finding the right balance between precision and artistry is crucial to creating a piece of furniture that is both beautiful and structurally sound.
In 2015, Neal was elected a fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsman, one of the most prestigious craft organisations, founded in 1887 from the beginnings of the Arts and Crafts movement.
