Founded in 1870, Davy's is a family business that has spanned five generations, cultivating a passion for great food, exceptional service, and, above all, wine. Our story begins with Francis Edwin Davy, who opened the Rising Sun near Strand, known as a "wine house, " during a time of rapid change and growth in the area. With the success of the Rising Sun, more establishments followed, and the wine merchants' side of the business grew rapidly. In 1902, F.E. Davy introduced our first own-label wines, which remain a cornerstone of our range and beloved by our customers.

During the challenging period of World War I and the General Strike in 1926, J.H.H. Davy kept the company's focus on quality wine and service, establishing a reputation as major shippers of Port that remains strong to this day. S.J.E. Davy led the company through World War II, during which the spirit of "Keep Calm and Carry On" was embraced, as illustrated in a photograph showing a lady cleaning the front step of The Alfred's Head while men repaired bomb damage just outside.

In 1964, under the leadership of 4th generation chairman, John Davy, Davy's opened The Boot & Flogger near London Bridge, the birth of what would become the UK wine bar phenomenon. Offering a wide selection of fine wines served by the glass, accompanied by quality food, it quickly became a fashionable destination for food and wine lovers. Wine shops were sold during the 1970s to allow the company to focus on the wine bar business, which continued to grow and expand throughout the decades, with the majority of new openings in and around the City and in the newly refurbished Covent Garden.
