At the Duchy Preschool & Playgroup, Bradninch, our mission is to provide a warm, happy, and secure environment for children to learn and thrive. We believe that building a child's self-confidence is at the heart of their education and a key element in their future success. Our vision is to foster the children's love of learning through curiosity and exploration, providing a language-rich environment to build on their communication and social skills.
Our History
The Duchy Preschool & Playgroup was formed in 1972 by a local group of mothers who felt that such a group would benefit their children. Initially, two sessions a week were held at a weekly cost of 25p for the first child and 20p for all other children in the family. The Supervisor was paid 1 per session! The group started with about ten children and met in the downstairs room of the Guildhall, then called the Reading Room. Equipment was minimal, and the group used trestle tables and jam jars for paint pots. Fundraising started in earnest with a Pippa Dee Party and a coffee morning, which raised 2.05 with 1.50 donations. In January 1976, an extra session was set up to meet the growing numbers of children in the town. In May 1997, the Playgroup celebrated its 25th anniversary and was granted the right to use its new title, the Duchy Preschool & Playgroup, by HRH Prince Charles' Duchy Office.

Our vision at the Duchy Preschool & Playgroup is to provide a warm, happy, and secure environment for our children to learn and thrive. We believe that building a child's self-confidence is at the heart of their education and a key element in their future success. We aim to foster the children's love of learning through curiosity and exploration, providing a language-rich environment to build on their communication and social skills. We promote healthy lifestyles by encouraging physical activity, healthy snacks, and good personal hygiene. It is important to us that our children are involved in their local community and have a sense of belonging. As we develop our understanding of British values, the children learn about democracy, rules, tolerance, respect, and individual liberty. As a preschool, we recognize that every child is unique, and we celebrate this in a way that ensures that our children meet their full potential.
