Smokey Joe's is a family-run business that has been dedicated to providing excellent food, drinks, and entertainment to the people of Gloucestershire for over four generations. Our story begins with great-grandma Hilda, who catered afternoon teas on the lawn at her house in Churchdown in the 1930s. This house was then converted into a cafe, which later became the first Smokey Joe's. During World War II and the 1950s, our grandparents, Phyllis and Ken, fed and entertained both locals and American GIs from the nearby airbase. They also installed the first jukebox in the South West, bringing popular music to the area.
In the 1960s, our parents, Steve and Pat, bought an old printing works in Cheltenham town centre. They converted it into a cafe with a games arcade, naming it Smokey Joe's after the original cafe in Churchdown. The cafe became a popular spot for teenagers to meet, socialize, and enjoy the latest video games and pinballs throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Over the years, we have continued to celebrate our family heritage and passion for American culture. Our menu reflects this, with a mix of classic American comfort food and new twists on old favourites. Our bar serves a range of cocktails and beers, and our live music and comedy club offers something for everyone.
The New Smokey Joe's
In 2013, we reopened Smokey Joe's as a Vintage and Retro Diner & Bar, embracing our family heritage from the past and taking it forward into the future. We have since become Cheltenham's favourite Jazz Club & Live Events Venue, hosting live music, comedy, and jazz performances.
