Square Farm Shop is a family-run business that has been thriving in Monmouth, Gwent, since 1978. Established by Mr and Mrs EH and KV Whittall, the farm has now passed into the capable hands of their son, Robert. The business encompasses a flourishing farm shop, selling a wide array of organic, home-grown produce, as well as an expanding range of local products from the Wye Valley and surrounding areas. Square Farm is a traditional mixed farm, housing cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, and geese. Cereal and root crops are grown for animal feed and an increasing number of vegetable crops are produced to stock the farm shop.
In addition to our home-grown produce, we also sell organic and traditionally-reared meat, eggs, vegetables, ice cream, milk, chutneys, and fruit preserves from other reputable local farms. We are proud members of the Welsh Organic Scheme and the Farm Assured Welsh Livestock Scheme, ensuring that we maintain the highest standards of quality and environmental consciousness. Our beef, for instance, is hung for up to six weeks for a more tender texture, demonstrating our commitment to providing premium products.
Our Farm Produce
At Square Farm Shop, we specialise in providing a variety of meats, including lamb, pork, goat meat, and beef, as well as a selection of healthy, organic vegetables. Our produce is of an unrivalled quality, and we pride ourselves on the unmatched taste and freshness of our farm produce compared to imported alternatives available in supermarkets.
Our Suppliers
Alongside our own outstanding produce, we sell a range of products from other local farms, handpicked for their exceptional quality. These farms share our commitment to organic and traditional farming methods, ensuring that our customers receive only the best produce. We value our relationships with our suppliers, and we are proud to support other local businesses.
Our Environmental Commitment
At Square Farm, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously. We operate a successful land management scheme, incorporating the Glastir scheme at entry level and advanced level. In recent years, we have created over 400 metres of new hedgerows consisting of British native plants, grown three small orchards using traditional fruit trees, and installed 20 bat boxes and 20 dormouse nesting boxes. We have also fenced off over seven acres of woodland to prevent livestock inclusion and manage 15 acres of grassland as "low inputs" to encourage natural habitats. We have released approximately 40 British grey partridges for naturalisation and have many plans for further improvement and diversification in the future.
Our Family and Staff
Our team consists of Robert's son, Ryan, who manages Square Farm Shop and operates a range of businesses, from timber cutting and drying through to high-quality cabinet making and hand-built custom kitchens. We also employ one permanent member of staff as a general farming assistant, as well as a number of temporary, self-employed staff for planting, weeding, and harvesting. We are a close-knit family business, and we welcome customers to visit our farm shop and experience our exceptional farm produce.
