Trust us to restore your heritage, brick by brick

The Maya Centre is a community-based charity that has been providing specialist counselling and holistic support to low-income and minoritised women since 1984. Our mission is to build a safe and inclusive women-for-women community where women can access free mental health and wellbeing services, addressing a range of compounding issues that affect their mental health, from everyday sexism to historical and intergenerational trauma.

Our History

The Maya Centre was established in 1984 in response to the growing need for accessible mental health services for women on low incomes. Over the years, we have evolved to meet the changing needs of our service users, adapting our services to include community languages, intercultural and intersectional approaches, and targeted support for specific minoritised cultural groups.

Our Services

Our services are designed to support women's recovery from depression, trauma, and violence against women and girls. We offer a range of services, including:

  • Counselling: Free, culturally sensitive counselling offered one-to-one or in groups, exploring difficult, painful, or traumatic experiences and feelings within a safe and confidential space.
  • Education: Outreach group work in community languages, sharing knowledge and information about women's safety and self-care.
  • Wellbeing: Wellbeing workshops designed by women for women, building confidence, self-esteem, and support networks.

Our Team

The Maya Centre is a team of qualified and dedicated professionals with a passion for women's mental health and wellbeing. Our staff have the collective experience and skills to meet the needs of women from a wide range of cultural and language backgrounds. Our Counsellors are all BACP registered, speak over 14 different languages between them, and are well-supported via clinical supervision, regular staff meetings, and bespoke CPD training on women's mental health.

Our Vision

Our vision is a world where all women can prioritise their mental health and wellbeing, safe from abuse, exclusion, or discrimination. We strive to create a safe and inclusive women-for-women community, empowering women to take control of their wellbeing and lives.

Overall Impression

The reviews provide a mixed assessment of the Maya Centre, with both positive and negative comments.

Positive Comments

Many reviewers have spoken highly of the centre and its staff. Siobhann, a counsellor at the centre, is described as "one of the nicest and most empathic" by Evie Kaley, who rates her experience 5 stars. Belinda Stokes also praises the centre, stating that it has helped her "so much". Fadumo Omar Mohamed highlights the centre's commitment to supporting ethnic minority women, noting that it offers therapy in their native languages. Becky Swift describes the centre as a "haven" and a "much-needed service", praising its unique offering of therapy in several languages.

Negative Comments

However, Crisy's experience was much less positive. She reports that her data protection was breached, and that her appointment details were sent to another client. Crisy also felt that the therapist she saw, Diana, was insensitive and showed a lack of duty of care.
