Smith & Butterfield is a historic optician practice located in the heart of the Lake District, providing high-quality eye care to our patients since 1926. As a team, we pride ourselves on giving our patients the diligent service they deserve, whether it be for an eye test, one of our clinical services, or for the supply of spectacle and contact lenses. Our History
Our history dates back to 1926, when William Cowen opened an optical practice in Keswick. His son, Donald, continued in his father's footsteps and moved the practice to Southey Street. Katharine Butterfield, a family friend of Don, succeeded him in 1999, and since then her husband, Stephen, joined the practice as an optometrist. In 2009, Paul Smith joined us as dispensing manager, and in partnership with him, we have become Smith & Butterfield.
Our Services
We offer a range of services, including eye tests, contact lens fittings, and spectacle dispensing. Our optometrists strive to tailor each consultation and eye examination to your personal needs using the latest in Zeiss diagnostic equipment to provide quality eye care. We also provide enhanced eye examinations using OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), a valuable tool to assist in the detection and diagnosis of eye conditions.

Each pair of spectacles is individually styled and fitted to your unique requirements. We offer an eyewear styling service to help you find the perfect eyewear to suit your facial features, lifestyle, and prescription needs. We have a wide range of eyewear to choose from, and our experienced team will be on hand to advise you on the best options for your individual needs.
