Empowering You to Find Your Voice

At Counselling Connections, we pride ourselves on providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals, couples, and families to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Our mission is to empower people to navigate life's challenges, from the everyday stresses of family life to the more significant disruptions caused by serious illness or bereavement.

Meet Shirley Mitchell

As a senior accredited counsellor and supervisor with over 25 years of experience, I have had the privilege of working with people from all walks of life. My journey in counselling began when I was a therapeutic radiographer at a London teaching hospital, where I witnessed firsthand the distress and uncertainty that patients and their families face during medical treatment. This experience sparked my interest in counselling and led me to undertake extensive training to become a qualified counsellor.

My Qualifications and Training

Throughout my career, I have continued to develop my skills and knowledge through a range of professional development courses, including:

  • Awarded BACP Senior Accreditation in 2009
  • Awarded BACP Accreditation in 2001
  • Relate Certified and Trained Supervisor in 1999-2000
  • Relate Certified and Trained Counsellor in 1989-1991
  • Metanoia Institute - BACP Accredited Course in Rogerian Counselling in 1988

How Can Counselling Help Me?

As a qualified and experienced counsellor, I endeavour to provide a confidential and non-judgmental space for individuals, couples, and families to explore their thoughts and feelings. Most sessions are one-to-one, or with a couple or family. From time to time, it can be beneficial to be in a confidential group alongside others who are in a similar situation.

Counselling for Families and Teenagers

When it comes to family life, no-one expects a manual for being the perfect parent. From day one, we all have to learn as we go. The pressured lives we lead can make family life stressful, and its different phases can be challenging. Many families find the opportunity to talk with an objective outsider helps improve communication and build family relationships. This can particularly be the case when teenagers are trying to adjust to a huge range of experiences and emotions both within the family and among their peers.

Counselling for Life-Affecting Illness & Cancer

There are many illnesses that can cause huge changes in people's lives. When an illness is diagnosed, a lot of attention can be focused on the medical treatment and practicalities, and the emotional effects may be ignored. Illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, M.E., and Cancer can be life-changing. They can affect patients, their families, and their friends alike. Counselling can help by providing a safe space to talk through thoughts and feelings relating to both the emotional and physical effects.
