Transforming Spaces, Enhancing Lives

Welcome to our counselling and supervision services, based in the tranquil setting of Newport Village in the East Riding. I am John Urquhart, a professional qualified and BACP Senior Accredited counsellor with extensive experience since 1996. I have had the pleasure and the privilege of working with a diverse range of clients, from hospital settings to university environments and private practice. My aim is to provide a safe, containing environment where my clients can express and explore difficult feelings and thoughts in complete confidence.

Professional Status and Qualifications

I am a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor, adhering to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy's Code of Ethics and Practice, and subject to its Complaints Procedure. I have a Diploma in Integrative Counselling, a Level 6 Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision, and certifications in Transactional Analysis, Modern Approaches to Self Psychology, Human Attachment and Counselling, and Working with Depressed and Suicidal Clients. I counsel from my home, which has off-street parking and wheelchair access. My fees are 40 for 60 minutes for counselling sessions and 60 for 90 minutes for supervision sessions, negotiable for those with limited income, students, and the unemployed.

My Life Experience

I was born in London and, after leaving school, decided to train as a priest. I soon realized that this was not my path and joined the army. While serving in the Middle East, I was involved in a road traffic accident and became a wheelchair user. After leaving the army, I trained as an accountant and worked in the private sector and the Civil Service. After taking voluntary redundancy, I decided to train as a counsellor - one of the most challenging yet fulfilling experiences of my life. I have been involved in the lives of countless individuals and have witnessed the power of counselling in empowering people to find their inner strength, resources, and the capacity to resolve their problems.

Our Counselling Services

Counselling is a process that supports clients in finding their answers to the problems they bring to the sessions. This approach is grounded in the belief that we all have the capacity to resolve our issues and that we often have more choices than we may think. Counselling offers a safe space to address difficult or painful issues in your life, identify and overcome symptoms of distress, discover your inner strength and resources, build self-esteem, create options for personal growth, developement and find ways to achieve positive changes in your life.

The first session is always regarded as exploratory, with no commitment required from either the client or the counsellor to work together beyond this point. However, many clients find it helpful to attend on this basis initially, as it allows them to ensure that they feel comfortable with the counselling process.

I am now retired from counselling and am no longer taking on any clients or supervisees.
